Buglife and Kent Wildlife Trust are asking drivers to turn ordinary journeys into insect data through the Bugs Matter 2026 survey. The project does not ask volunteers simply to report insects they notice in gardens or parks. It uses a more specific method: counting insect splats on vehicle number plates after journeys.
The method is built around the windscreen phenomenon, the long-running observation that drivers see fewer insects on cars than they once did. By standardizing that everyday impression into repeated journey records, the survey gives scientists a broader view of flying-insect abundance across the UK, Ireland and, for 2026, France.
Bugs Matter Starts Earlier in 2026
The 2026 survey launches on April 1 and runs through September 30, starting a month earlier than in previous years to capture early-season data. That timing matters because insect activity changes across spring and summer, and a longer recording window can reveal whether declines are consistent or concentrated in particular periods.
Participants use the Bugs Matter app and a simple sampling grid to record splats after trips. A single journey is not decisive, but thousands of repeated records across different roads, regions and seasons can show trends that formal field teams could not collect alone.
The South East remains important because the survey has strong roots through Kent Wildlife Trust and Buglife, and because roads through Kent, Surrey and Sussex cut across farmland, towns, woodland edges, coastal routes and commuter corridors. But the 2026 project is wider than one region, and that scale is part of its value.
Earlier Results Show a Sharp Decline
Buglife says earlier Bugs Matter records showed a 59 percent decline in flying insects sampled on vehicle number plates between 2021 and 2025. Analysis from more than 25,000 journeys also pointed to an alarming average annual decline in bug splats over the same period.
Those figures should be read carefully. A splat survey is not the same as a complete census of all insects. It mainly reflects flying insects that cross roads and hit vehicles, and results can be affected by weather, route type, vehicle speed and season. But the signal is still valuable because it measures abundance at a scale that would be hard to reproduce with specialist surveys alone.
The strength of the project is repetition. If enough drivers record journeys in the same way year after year, scientists can compare patterns and ask sharper questions about habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate stress, road networks and seasonal change.
Citizen Science Fills a Data Gap
Insect decline is difficult to measure because invertebrate diversity is enormous and expert capacity is limited. Professional ecologists cannot monitor every verge, field margin and road corridor. Citizen science helps fill that gap when volunteers follow a consistent method and submit usable records.
The project also makes insect loss visible to people who might otherwise treat it as an abstract conservation issue. A clean number plate after a long summer drive can feel like convenience. In ecological terms, it may be a warning sign. Fewer flying insects can mean less food for birds, weaker pollination, poorer soil systems and more fragile food webs.
That public connection matters. Insects rarely attract the political attention given to birds, mammals or landscapes, even though they support much of the living system those species depend on. Bugs Matter turns a small, slightly unpleasant detail of driving into evidence for a much larger environmental question.
Insect Data Verdict
The survey is useful because it does not pretend that insect decline can be solved by sentiment. It asks for repeatable data. That is the right instinct. Conservation needs public concern, but it also needs measurements strong enough to influence planning, farming, road management and pesticide policy.
If the 2026 records confirm the earlier decline, the message will be hard to dismiss: the quiet summer windscreen is not just nostalgia. It is a data point in a wider loss, and Buglife is asking drivers to help prove how far that loss has gone.
